Kalamkari:
The word Kalamkari is derived from a Persian word where 'kalam' means pen and 'kari' refers to craftsmanship. Initially Kalamkari fabrics were hand painted but today wooden carved blocks are used. Kalamkari textiles were a prized trading commodity throughout Asia and Europe for hundreds of years. This traditional art has survived among dedicated artisans in southern India who follow the age–old techniques and natural dye recipes of this painstaking process. The process can involve 23 steps each requiring precision and an eye for detailing.

Beautiful dress but flawed

I am leaving four stars because the fabric bleeds even after treatment with 1/2 cup of white vinegar (per instructions). I have ordered from Marketplace for 25+ years and until recently, say in the last year or so there has never been a bleed issue. I have washed clothes without sorting because I've never needed to. Now it's become a hassle. Is it too much to ask to fix the dye before sewing the fabric? I am pleased with Marketplace's business model and really want to support the company and the cooperatives but this issue is making me think twice about future purchases.
MarketPlace's Response: We're sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with your recent purchase from MarketPlace. Fixing the dyes is part of the process of our fabric treatment. However, sometimes the excess dye continues to bleed for a few washes. This product has been printed using natural dyes which cal be a bit temperamental. We recommend washing our garments separately and adding salt and vinegar to the first wash.
