Chindi: Making Fashion Eco‐Friendly With Fabric Scraps

The fashion industry is one of the world's worst polluters. By one estimate, 15% of the fabric used in production is wasted, likely ending up in landfills. Exacerbating the environmental cost, many fast fashion textiles are not biodegradable. Making cheap and trendy clothing often involves low quality materials like polyester.

At MarketPlace, our concern for the environment means that we do business differently. While making garments inevitably produces leftover pieces of cloth, we have come up with ways to reduce and recycle. Cutting out from patterns is done in smaller batches with more flexibility to control waste. Our custom hand‐dyed fabrics are produced in lengths specifically tailored to maximize usable surface. Our fabrics are cotton, organic cotton and linen, all biodegradable.

What scraps we produce, called Chindi, are put to good use as accents and patchwork. We intentionally design products to incorporate these beautiful pieces.
