“It's About What Needs to Be Done”
When MarketPlace expanded to Nallasopara—20 km from its main office—it invited local women to form cooperatives. It wasn't easy. Starting a cooperative takes time, trust, and many meetings to build shared purpose. Unlike factory jobs, cooperative members share responsibilities and take part in programs that focus on empowerment, leadership, and parenting.
Shanti joined the early discussions to form Shramik Mahila Mandal (SMM), but family responsibilities kept her from joining. In 2023, when Akasa was created, she finally had the opportunity.
Now, Shanti contributes to her family's income—but more importantly, she's grown in confidence. “I'm part of a group. I'm not afraid to travel to the MarketPlace office if needed. Life isn't just about what you want to do—it's about doing what needs to be done. I've taught that to my children.”
With a smile, she adds, “Now that I'm earning, I can even take my family on vacations. That makes me really happy.”
