The Art of Chindi: Reshaping Fashion Through Textile Recycling

The fabric scraps which are left over from cutting and finishing garments are called Chindi in India. These bits and pieces of our beautiful hand‐dyed fabrics are too good to waste, so we have created a number of ways to use them. It's good for the environment too.

You will find them throughout our collection as accents, pannels, borders – whatever we can come up with to add a unique touch to our garments. The process by which this chaotic jumble of colors and patterns is tamed requires both creativity and careful organization.

First the pieces are sorted into light and dark prints, color families and general size. To make the patchworks more consistent, they are then over‐dyed. This way the appearance is more harmonious, and it allows all the pieces in a line to be similar. Our Chindi creations reduce waste, enhance artisans' sewing skills, and showcase unique innovative design techniques.

Beautiful jacket but flawed
Jan 19, 2025  |  By Susie H.
I like the jacket well enough to not return it, but I am disappointed none the less. After washing the jacket in vinegar, cold water and hanging to dry, I noticed that the fabric had puckered in some places. I am leaving three stars because of this issue and that the fabric bleeds even after treatment with 1/2 cup of white vinegar (per instructions). I have ordered from Marketplace for 25+ years and until recently, say in the last year or so there has never been a bleed issue. I have washed clothes without sorting because I've never needed to. Now it's become a hassle. Is it too much to ask to fix the dye before sewing the fabric? I am pleased with Marketplace's business model and really want to support the company and the cooperatives but this issue is making me think twice about future purchases.
MarketPlace's Response: We're sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with your recent purchase from MarketPlace. Fixing the dyes is part of the process of our fabric treatment. However, sometimes the excess dye continues to bleed for a few washes. We recommend washing our garments separately and adding salt and vinegar to the first wash.

This Jacket is comfortable and warm. I love the reversible aspect when lighter moon is fitting. Very nice color combining.
