Gaining Industry Insights: Artisans Visit a Garment Factory
Most women artisans working with MarketPlace have no prior professional training in sewing or embroidery‐they have learned these skills on the job. While the primary goal is to provide employment to women with limited work opportunities, exposure to the larger garment industry is also crucial for building knowledge and confidence.
To gain firsthand insights, a group of tailors visited Dupatta World Pvt. Ltd., a leading garment manufacturer in Mumbai. They observed large‐scale factory operations, including structured workflows, quality control, and time management‐key elements of efficient production.
The visit introduced artisans to advanced machinery and modern techniques, reinforcing the value of continuous skill development. They also reflected on the differences between factory work and their own process, appreciating the ability to create entire garments rather than being limited to repetitive tasks like collars or cuffs.
This experience was both educational and inspiring, equipping artisans with new ideas and a broader perspective to enhance their work and strengthen their cooperatives.
