A Healthy Future
October 01, 2019 | By Pushpika Freitas, President of MarketPlaceUnder the Darpan program, artisans are able to deal with subjects that affect their quality of life and come up with responses. Back in the Winter of 2017, the group decided to focus on their health and well-being. Two leaders from each group created a questionnaire and conducted a survey of all of their members in order to identify any health issues. When they collated the results, they learned that a majority of them had not had a blood test or eye exam in the past two or three years.
As a result, blood tests and eye exams were conducted for all of the artisans, and they were able to act on the results. As a further aid to wellness, the women chose to attend yoga classes. A well-established local yoga institute has been conducting regular sessions with the artisans.
In addition, a family health insurance plan has been worked out for the artisans. MarketPlace pays 75 percent of the premiums, the groups pay 15 percent, and the artisans pay 10 percent. Having this coverage will be a great relief to the artisans and will help them to be healthy.
