Vasundhara Chandrakant Humane: A Journey of Learning and Growth
October 3rd, 2024At 42, Vasundhara Chandrakant Humane has found a new chapter in her life through her work with the Nishchay Cooperative. A self-taught seamstress, she had never used an electric sewing machine until joining Nishchay, where she now thrives in a supportive and challenging environment.
Rediscovering A Passion
Vasundhara moved to Mumbai 16 years ago after her marriage. As a young girl, she was drawn to sewing, creating traditional Gujarati dresses. When her son turned six and started school, she saw an opportunity to rekindle her interest in working with fabrics. The cooperative's flexible work environment allowed her to balance her professional aspirations with her responsibilities as a mother, making her decision to return to sewing much easier.
Embracing New Skills
"When I decided to start working again, I took a proper course and mostly learned how to stitch blouses. But when I joined Nishchay Cooperative, it was like learning a whole new profession. It was not just about stitching a garment. It is about the perfect quality," Vasundhara says. Her time at Nishchay has been marked by continuous learning, adapting to new techniques, and mastering the electric sewing machine.
Enjoying Cooperative Culture
Vasundhara appreciates the community aspect of the cooperative. "I really enjoy the company of the other women and the social programs," she shares. These activities provide a break from the routine and foster a sense of camaraderie among the members. Celebrating each other's birthdays is a highlight, making each member feel special and valued.
Navigating Challenges
As a new cooperative, Nishchay faces its share of conflicts, which Vasundhara finds challenging. She believes that many issues arise from a lack of understanding among the artisans. "If we are open to listening to other viewpoints and follow mutual respect for each other, all the issues can be sorted easily and in a friendly way," she says. Despite these challenges, Vasundhara remains optimistic and excited about her new path.
Vasundhara's involvement with Nishchay has significantly boosted her confidence. Earning an income and finding a place where she belongs and can voice her opinions have empowered her. "I am learning new things every day. There are many things I need to improve, but I am confident that I can get there," she says. The cooperative has provided her with a platform to grow both personally and professionally, and she is eager to continue this journey. Vasundhara's story is one of resilience and continuous learning. Her journey with the Nishchay Cooperative highlights the transformative power of supportive work environments and the importance of community in fostering personal growth.
