Empowered by Hand: The Story of MarketPlace Garments

In a world dominated by fast fashion and mass production, we've chosen a different path--a path steeped in history, artistry, and purpose. At MarketPlace, every fabric tells a story. From hand block printing to hand batiking, hand painting, and hand tie-dyeing on 100% cotton, our fabrics embody centuries-old traditions that were once part of everyday life in India. Yet, these vibrant techniques are fading under the pressure of machines and synthetics. From day one, we've committed to reviving these traditions--not just to preserve their beauty, but to provide meaningful livelihoods for the artisans who create them. And through this commitment, we offer you, our customers, rare hand-printed textiles that are truly one of a kind.

Our mission goes far beyond fabric. We work with 11 women-run cooperatives in Mumbai, each formed to empower women who face limited opportunities. Whether experienced or new to sewing, every woman finds a place in these cooperatives. By tailoring garment designs to suit varying skill levels, we ensure every participant has the chance to earn a dignified living.

The journey of each garment is meticulous and collaborative. Cooperative managers, with support from MarketPlace staff, oversee fabric procurement. Once the fabric arrives, it undergoes strict quality checks before being transformed into production samples. After approval, the fabric is cut by skilled cutters, then distributed to the tailors, who bring the designs to life. Unlike in factories, where repetitive tasks dominate, our tailors craft entire garments--mastering every detail from collars and pockets to intricate pin tucks. This approach not only enhances their skills but also brings them the pride of creating something whole. Frequent style changes and smaller production runs ensure their work remains dynamic and engaging.

The communal workshops where sewing takes place are more than just workspaces--they are hubs of support and learning. Electric sewing machines are used and the women help and assist each other fostering a spirit of camaraderie.

Once sewing is complete, the garments are handed over to embroidery artisans, who add intricate hand-embellishments from the comfort of their homes. This flexibility allows them to balance their work with household responsibilities. Each finished piece undergoes rigorous quality checks before being proudly signed by both the sewing and embroidery artisans. These signatures are not just marks of craftsmanship; they are declarations of ownership, pride, and resilience.

And so, each garment carries a legacy--of ancient traditions, empowered women, and thoughtful design. In a world that often overlooks the makers, we celebrate their hands, their skills, and their dreams. Together, we ensure these traditions live on and these voices are heard.
